#blackout friday

picture it. it’s black friday 2003, and wal-mart has dvd players on sale for $20. these were the pre-netflix days so a dvd player priced under $75 was a huge steal.  like dedicated shoppers across america, i woke up at dawn to rush my local wal-mart.

all hell broke loose when somebody’s uncle jumped on a stack of boxes and started throwing dvd players to nearby customers. i caught one like odell beckham jr. and ran for my life. you would have thought i was carrying baby jesus.

fast forward to 2015. not only do i try to abstain from shopping at wal-mart due to it’s anti-worker practices, but i’m also working hard to align my spending with my principles. with the murders of so many black men, women and children, i’m in no mood to celebrate a capitalist system that devalues black life.

this holiday season, my mission is to support black-owned businesses who deserve love year round. on friday morning, i’ll be shopping online from the comfort of my bed while eating leftover sweet potato pie.

it’s soooooo hot on the east coast! i won’t complain — i’m a florida girl, so warm temperatures are my jam. i fell in love with this bright top at nomad yard this weekend. if you haven’t stopped by the recently voted best vintage store of 2015, do yourself a favor and make your way to 411 new york avenue ne stat. aside from the beautiful one-of-a kind pieces, the store is curated like a museum with clothing, accessories, art and interior decor to boot.

crush of the week: danielle from love 416

dani1we love dani because her blog, personal style and eye for interior decor are fresh. not fresh like fly (although she most certainly is), but fresh like walking through a farmer’s market with a breeze on your back. she’s simply lovely.

DSC_0694DSC_0704DSC_0707DSC_0715DSC_0723DSC_0737hey good people, i hope you enjoyed your weekend!  we visited brooklyn for the afropunk festival this weekend and had a blast.  between three stages, vendors and food trucks, it felt like a playground. i have way too many dope shots to share in one post, so i’ll keep this one simple and share more later this week.

hope you had a good weekend!

lupita nyong’o is the new face of Lancôme

Lupita-NyongO-BellaNaijacongrats and much love to our darling academy award winner lupita nyong’o for becoming the new face of lancome cosmetics. al jazeera america reports lupita will be the brand’s first black model (yes, we’re still having these type firsts in 2014).  let us pray to the photo shop gods that she’s allowed to authentically represent brown skin — without the beauty industry’s standard skin lightening technique for brown skin models.
